As long as it is planted in well-drained soil, ivy thrives with little or no care. It prefers rich, acidic, organic soil, but will adapt to grow anywhere. It can tolerate any type of sunlight including full sun, part shade, or full shade. Given adequate moisture during the summer, it will produce a heavy flush of new leaves every year. Ivy should be planted in a place where it will remain permanently and be allowed to spread freely. Do not try to confine it to a small space. Clip back any stems that outgrow their bounds.
